Chris Robinson, "The Animation Pimp"
Animationsでもおなじみのクリス・ロビンソンの新刊が発売されました。

オタワ国際アニメーション・フェスティバルのディレクターであるクリス・ロビンソンがawn.comで毎月連載していたThe Animation Pimpが書籍化された。
時に偏見と言っていいほどの独断に満ちたその書きっぷりは、多少の問題を孕みながらも、やはりいつも通りに痛快であることが多い。
芸術ぶった作品を憎み、自分の境遇（特にアル中）と引き合う対象に異常にのめり込み、いつも饒舌でいながらも「アニメーション批評とは何か」というテーマのディスカッションで一言も発しない彼のアニメーションに対する態度はとてもはっきりしていて、この本にはそれがきちんと宣言されている。
「このアニメーションというテントはチャペルみたいなものだ。アニメーションは私にとってやすらぎの場所でありつづけていて、自分自身を発見し、浄化し、吐露し、定義し、失い、そしてまた発見する場を与えてくれる。（……）五年間のあいだ、私はこの連載という場を使って、アニメーションとは自分にとって何を意味するのかを見出そうとしてきた。そして私がそのどこにふさわしいかを判断しようとした……いや、もっと大事なのは、アニメーションは私の人生のどこにフィットするんかということを見つけることだ。だからその通り、この旅は自分自身についての旅であり、自分を見つけるための旅なのだ。」("The Stars"）
ロビンソンの著作に親しむ者にとっては、彼は充分すぎるほどに自分を発見しきっているように思える。だからこそ、彼の著作はアニメーションをみる際の一つのガイドとなる。自分に必要なものだけを誉める。だから、彼の傾向はとてもわかりやすいし、時に自分と彼の好みは一致し、時に一致しない。つまり、アニメーションが好きなあなたであれば、この本を通じてロビンソンとコミュニケートすることができる。
本文の面白さは言うまでもない。
だが、巻末に付録としてついているWho's Whoのコーナーが奮っている。
ちょっとした情報をさりげなく提供してくれるのはもちろんのこと（キャロライン・リーフは絵画の方に入れ込んでいるのか……など）、ロビンソンというぶれない杓子定規によって、実に明快に様々なひとの居場所が見えてくる。
「ユーリー・ノルシュテイン……アニメーションの最高傑作だと言う人もいる『話の話』の作者。切り絵アニメーション作家。彼の作品はしばしば記憶と幼年時代を扱っている。私にとっては少しもったいぶりすぎているように思える。ヒゲがある。海賊になれるはず。」
「ポール・ドリエッセン……オランダ生まれのアニメーション作家で、カナダ、フランス、オランダの三か国に住んでいる。クールだね。『イエロー・サブマリンに参加。すごいことだよ。まだアニメーション作家として一人前じゃなかったのに。おそらくアニメーションをつくるよりもコーヒーを飲むほうに時間を使っている。たくさんの作品をつくった。いくつかは良い（"End of the World in Four Seasons"）。いくつかはそうでない。それが人生ってものだ。輝くグレーの髪とクールなグレーのあごひげをたくわえている。クールな海賊になれるだろうね。ポール・ドリエッセンという名のマーケット・リサーチャーがいる。pauldriessen.comをチェックせよ。ポール・ドリエッセンという名のミュージシャンがいる（pauldriessen.nl)。ドリエッセンが他の国に移住したのは不思議なことじゃない。私はカナダで他のポール・ドリエッセンを知らないからね。私のいとこの名前はポールだ。彼は海賊が好きじゃない。」

エストニア・アニメーションが好きなプログラム・コーディネーターについては、彼女が寝ているあいだに火事で死んでしまったことについて、「エストニアのアニメーション作家たちは、彼女が、エストニア・アニメーションに関する私の本を読みながら熟睡してしまったからに違いないと言っていた」などと反応に困ってしまう冗談を交えたりする。
裏表紙には、「いままで私が読んできたジャーナリズムの文章のなかで、最悪。」というAWNの掲示板の書き込みが載せられている。
確かに人によっては強い拒否反応を示してしまうだろうが、これが一冊あればしばらくのあいだはじゅうぶんに楽しめるのも確か。
刺激的なアニメーション論が読みたい方には是非おすすめ。

「田舎医者」日本の商業系アニメーションと個人製作の間を繋ぐ作品になると期待しています。
画面の雰囲気を見て、岡本忠成さんの「注文の多い料理店」を思い出しました。こちらは集団製作の作品ですが、画面の密度の上げ方など共通する所があるように思います。

Anyway, I love your way of writing because it always evokes my emotion strongly. I laugh and cry when I read your articles. I'm a researcher on animation. I am researching because I want to say through the research, "Like everyone I'm not like everybody else" just like you said in the book(So, thank you for saying that). You are You, Me is Me, but you and I are connecting each other. I think animation (and rock music) is very good to say so. I don't know why, but I feel that.

He is always talkative but said nothing when he attended at the conference about animation criticism. He hates arty attitude, deeply indulges in an object which relates to his own condition(ex.alcoholism)......In short, his attitude towards animation is always clear, and he declares this attitude in this book.
"These past five years i've been using this space to try and figure out what animation means to me, to try and find out where I fit in...more importantly, to try and find out where animation fits into my life. And yes, ultimately, this journey was about me trying to find me."("The Stars")
But, for those who have been familiar with his writing, it seems that he finds himself very clearly. So this book can be a great guide to animation. He praises what he thinks is necessary for him.
